Dubbed as the “forefather of indie-hop,” Sage Francis originally
earned acclaim in the early 2000’s by winning the most highly coveted
titles of the emcee battle circuit. Almost two decades after Francis
graduated from bootlegging his own music in hand-to-hand mixtape
distribution, he sits at the helm of one of hip-hop’s premier
independent labels; Strange Famous Records.
Setting aside the more boastful side of rap, Francis quickly became
recognized for the poetic leanings and scathing socio-political
commentary in his lyrics. His debut album, Personal Journals, was
heralded as both an artistic masterpiece and a genre game changer. The
risks taken in his music and business approach, through the course of
five plus commercial album releases, have helped Francis stay a few
steps ahead of an ever-changing game.
For the next project, Francis has teamed up with longtime friend and
collaborator B. Dolan to form the super-duo Epic Beard Men. The EBM
album will be released in early 2018, but in the meantime they’ll be
doing select international shows to test the new material.
